Nicolo

HOME

House Nicolo started out as a simple farming family run by the father who was once a noble Lord of Nae who married a Sole, the latter house was in a higher rank, but because Nae was so proud, they would not let Lord Barrana take the name unless it was hyphenated.  So for a time he was a Nae-Sole.  He and his wife had an amazing romance, and several children.  Lord Barrana was, however, unhappy with his life as a Nae.  He hated counting their wealth, he hated seeing people starve, scraping by with just enough money to buy a single kora fruit a day as the Nae family grew wealthier and wealthier.  For a time, he joined his wife as a dancer for the nobility's parties and gatherings.  It didn't last long.

When he and his wife were twenty-three and twenty, respectively, they renounced their title.  They did, however, still have money that was set in trust for them by the family.  They discussed for a long while what to do with the money.  Give it completely away to the poor, find a way to create better, well-paying jobs, or simply give small jobs to people to create art and beauty around Tow.  During this time in Tow, however, there was slight famine.  The rich ate and dressed as usual, but the poor, and the middle class were hungry.  The farms weren't being used, the land sat untilled and unplanted, save the MendiKu farms, but they only produced thuja.  So they finally came up with a plan.

Barrana and Eliana purchased most of the plots of land in Thraille for a good price.  They then began to hire workers to till the soil, season it properly for whatever was to grow on that particular plot, and the planting began.  In only two years, Tow had a surplus of food thanks to Barrana and Eliana, their farmhands, and several durins that they hired to produce food from thin air.  They sent their people into the city, and when things were good, they simply gave the food away to the poor, door to door, and as the economy improved, they filled the stores in the shelters across the city.  Most of the farmhands and shamans eventually married amongst one another, and to the children of Baraana and Elianna.  Ten years after he began his mission, he gave the new, enormous family a name: Nicolo, which in old Towskish means "to give and to bless".

This was noticed by the Sunjin, who at that time was Dulcinda Kirana.  She was so impressed that she named the Nicolo family nobility, and their great plantation house the Nicolo Estate.  The plantation house was enormous by this time.  They added wing after wing as the family grew, and they all grew together.  Children were born, the elderly died peacefully, and all was in harmony with this family, as it is to this day.  There was no ranking in family, though Baranna and Elianna were held in the highest of esteem.

Eventually, in his fiftieth year, Baranna decided to open two shops in the heart of the city of Tow.  One specializing in beverages that sold to both the wealthy and just plain thirsty, within Willow Park, and food shop on the Path of Peace.   They still give constantly to the homeless shelters, the hospital, and the orphanage.

The most famous of all of the Nicolos came much later when Antoninus Nicolo was born.  He was taken from his family, which gave them great pride, to be raised by the SunJin, in all matters of life, magic, morality, respect, and status.  He was taken to a life of luxury and peace, to one of kindness and warmth in a mother who could not give birth.  Antoninus Nicolo eventually became the Emperor of Tow, and married.  He had one child, but had by then disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

To this date, most of the common people bestow the highest ranked house in their mind either to Nicolo for their free giving and fair prices,  or to the Kondei who risk their life.  It is the topic of many a conversation.
